We are truly blessed to be the home of Little Children’s Ministry (LCM) Pre-School and Daycare. Little Children’s provides a Christian atmosphere including a host of opportunities for children to learn and grow in faith. Our goal is to serve the people of our community by strengthening children and their families.

Child care of children ages six weeks to twelve years (or when they start Middle School) is available. This care is offered through daycare, pre-school, summer and before/after school programs.

LCM is directed by Belinda Jordan, who has National Director’s Credentials in Early Childhood Education. She brings to LCM and the Director position a variety of experiences in planning, curriculum, leadership and building relationships with families.

Infants

Picture
There are two infant rooms at LCM. In the younger infant room, children are six weeks to a year old. At one, they enter the Frog room and remain for approximately six months.

Little Children’s Ministry follows Safe Sleep practices. Children under one year old cannot have anything in their crib with them other than a sleep sack and their pacifier.

Children will not be allowed to sleep in swings or bouncy seats without a doctor’s order for a specific medical condition. Each child has his or her own crib.  No other child will sleep in it.  LCM provides laundered sheets.

In the younger infant room, we provide all food (including infant cereal, baby food, and formula). If you do not accept the type of formula we provide, you will be responsible for bringing your own.  Babies are held while taking a bottle.  There is no bottle propping.  Bibs and burp pads are provided.

Children receive diaper changes every two hours unless there is an obvious need for a change to occur earlier.  Individual charts are kept for each child.  Parents may review the chart each day when they pick up their child.  The charts will contain the following information:  when the child was diapered, when a bottle was given and how much formula was consumed, when the child received baby food and how much was eaten, when the child napped and for how long.

When children are awake, both fine and gross motor skills will be encouraged through the use of toys and activities such as tummy time.

In the Frog room, learning accelerates as children work on new skills. By now the children are probably crawling and doing his or her best to get around alone.  Walking will begin soon.  Older Infants will start learning to interact with their friends and to share toys. In the dining room, children will begin to learn to use a spoon in addition to their fingers to master the fine motor skills of feeding themselves.

Additionally, children will be able to enjoy walks outside in the buggies.

Toddlers

LCM has three toddler rooms: Turtles, Geckos, and Tigers. Classes range in age from 1 ½ to 3. In the youngest room, the children begin to experience new things. They work on tasks such as washing their hands and sitting in a group at their meals. They begin sleeping on cots and start the basics of potty training! Small crafts will also be done to introduce colors.

As a child progresses to the older toddler room, learning to listen and pick up toys will be stressed.  Time will be spent learning self-help skills such as putting on your own shoes, socks, and jackets.  Academic instruction will begin.

In the oldest room, the main goal of the teachers is to help prepare children for preschool.  Time will be spent on social skills (listening, following directions, manners, etc.). ABC’s will be introduced as will learning to count 1-2-3...There will be planned activities every day.  A monthly calendar will be sent home at the beginning of each month with the planned activities listed. Toilet training will continue to be an important activity. Children must wear pull-ups or underwear to encourage potty training.   A daily sheet with toileting results will be sent home.  Each child will receive a sticker and a small treat every time they use the toilet.  If a child is dry all day, he or she will get a treat.  Parents are asked to help with this effort and work with the teacher. To start developing fine motor skills, time will be spent painting, coloring, and creating projects.

Learning through play will be enjoyed on the toddler’s very own playground. They will also begin working on walking up and down stairs.  These activities help with developing balance and large motor skills.

Preschool

The main goals of LCM’s preschool program are to prepare children academically and socially for kindergarten. There are five classes: Elephants, Monkeys, Zebras, Giraffes, and Bears. Within these different rooms, the children range in age from three to five and must be potty-trained. Because every child learns differently, our classes incorporate many different avenues of learning for children to explore. Activities on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays will fall into these categories: letters, numbers, art, cutting, shapes, and colors.  On Tuesdays and Thursdays activities will be less structured and will focus on dramatic play, social development, and individual help for those needing additional instruction. In the younger preschool classes, formal instruction begins. As this is a first experience for most children, learning activities begin slowly in our younger preschool classes.  There are several main goals.  One of these is for children to learn the letters of the alphabet.  Another is number literacy as children learn to recite numbers from memory, recognize numbers 1-10, and count actual items.  Additionally, children will learn the basic eight colors and do basic shape identification.

Both large and small motor skills will be developed. One of the techniques is use of scissors to make random cuts. Other activities include free drawing, working within the lines, using glue sticks, and tracing their first name. Children will be evaluated three times per school year.

Our two older preschool classes are for children who will enter kindergarten the following year. We will continue to work on cutting skills, writing his/her name, recognizing and writing capital and lower case letters, recognize counting numbers 1-30, colors, and shapes.  All these skills will be improved upon and the children will also begin to learn addresses, phone numbers, and sight words.

Instruction features large group instruction, use of worksheets, and station time.  During station time children are divided into small groups of 3-4 and allowed the freedom of moving to a station.  These stations include Reading, Writing, Art, Math, Science, Dramatic Play, Manipulatives, Music, and Sensory.   Children remain at the station until the task is completed or until asked to move on by the teacher.

School Age

LCM also offers care for school aged children from kindergarten through fifth grade in our Zoo Crew room. During the school year, we provide before and after school care, as well as full day care during their breaks. Transportation to and from school is offered also. Breakfast is served for those here before school, and snack for those who are here after.

Education and school work is important to us and for that reason, the Zoo Crew children will have structured homework time, Monday through Thursday. On Fridays, the children will attend chapel. The remainder of the time spent here will include time to interact with friends.

During breaks, especially summer break, our goal is to keep the kids active. Many trips and fun activities are planned. At the beginning of each summer, a calendar of all the events will be sent out.
